It's been a long time since I posted... quick updates, then:

Colleges applied to: Yale (deferred EA), Harvard, Brown, Georgetown, Dartmouth, Tufts, William and Mary, Washington and Lee, Case, UMass-Amherst.

Finals, done with five out of seven, Greek and art history (online class) tomorrow; those should not be difficult. Latin was longish but easy, Gov was pretty easy (few tricky MC), English was not bad (MC was tougher than I'm used to, though), Calc was fairly difficult (non-calculator MC and calculator FRQs were harder; calculator MC, non-calc FRQs were not as tough), and Physics was...well, it was physics.

think i'm going to switch to 2* BC Calc next semester so that my classes run 2-9, and i have 1/10 off...that'll be kinda nice.

1) Math Final - easy. 34 MC, 6 FR, none of it amazingly difficult. :)
2) English Final - thought-provoking but not terrible to write. Took me a Blue Book and a page (single-spaced) to write it. Good prompt, made it possible to draw from a very wide range of source material.\

yay for lunches with squirrels.

3) GOP Meeting - very positive. Debbie Sutherland seems like a credible candidate for commissioner, and at least Jerry Powell is challenging Budish. Flip side...wow, I didn't realize people actually thought the Illuminati controlled the world...

4) Chem Final - pretty easy. 100 MC, 2 multi-part FR. Again, not terrible, not as hard as most of our tests. I felt very prepared for it, which was certainly a plus.

yay for lunches with squirrels and friends.

Several Things

The past two days have been, shall we say, busy...
Friday: School was fine; I finished up one chem lab after school and then started to do another one before I had to go...when I got home, a little after 5, it was baseball time!

The first game was the (quite buggy) Yankees-Indians game at Jacobs Field. The Indians did not seem to be able to hit a baseball with anyone on base all night, but they tied the game at one on a wild pitch that scored a run in the bottom of the eighth. In the bottom of the eleventh, with the bases loaded, Hafner ripped a single up the middle to score a run, giving the Tribe a 2-1 win and 2-0 series lead; Game 3 is in the Bronx at 6:30 tonight.

The second game, which overlapped the first by about twenty minutes, was Angels-Red Sox at Fenway. The Sox took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but gave up three in the second; that's where the game stood until a sac fly by Mike Lowell tied the game at 3-all in the sixth. Although without the greatest of ease at times, the Sox bullpen held the Angels without a hit or run for the last thirteen outs of the game. In the bottom of the ninth, though, Julio Lugo led off with a single to left, and he got to second on a groundout by Dustin Pedroia. After Kevin Youkilis struck out, David Ortiz was intentionally walked, bringing Manny Ramirez to the plate with two on and two out. After a first-pitch ball, Ramirez sent a belt-high fastball soaring into the early Boston morning, giving the Sox a 6-3 win and a 2-0 series lead as the two teams travel to L.A. for Game 3 this afternoon.

Saturday Just when I thought it couldn't get any busier...I got to school a bit after 9 for homecoming float-building and the parade; Sarah and I held a "flying carpet" (or chuppa or chair, depending on whom you ask) for a couple hours. And we won! We beat the Germans for the first time in four years!! We were soooo happy (and still are...)
Then Katie, Mr. White and I ran the bake sale (with a little help from Anu) for the first three quarters of the football game. We made ~$150, but it was so...bloody...hot...and we didn't even have to wear band uniforms...
Then...well, bonum est saltare cum puella quam amo. 'nuff said.

Today's gonna be lots-and-lots of work. Greek stuff, Shakerite emails, macroecon notes, no math, English reading and a writing assignment, no Latin, and some chem stuff...oh, plus the Browns, Red Sox, and Indians...

short week coming up, since there's no school Friday. *party*

...since I last posted, so highlights only.

School: err, not much. I got the only A on the chem test despite not having been there waaaaaaay too often...
Greek is pretty good, and it's a lot of fun, even if it is insane.
Shakerite's not too bad...
Econ is good, but it's been tough with the amount of school I've missed. I think/hope I did pretty well on the test.
Math has also been good, especially since I more or less like the stuff we're doing. (yay trig!)
English...Springstubb has grown on me, that's for absolute sure.
Latin...we're done with the Lesbia poems! Yeyeyeyeyeyey! I love Catullus 11 though...it's *so* vicious. I think in order from my most to least favorite, the AP authors are: 1) Ovid; 2) Cicero; 3)Vergil/Catullus tied; 5) Horace.
Chem...yeah, like I said, I got a 93 on a test everyone else...shall we say, did not do well on. I'm liking it a lot, even though it's a lot of work.

Golf...Sawmill Creek was fun, I shot 88. It's a nice course and a nice tournament, even if it is forever away.
LELs was a disaster, I shot 103 at Fowler's Mill. We only had four guys, so we shot 401, which is...less than ideal.
Sectionals didn't go too badly, I shot 98. Julian made it out with a 79, I'm happy about that. And I'm talking in these very bizarrely constructed sentences...

Yay for certamen!

The Browns played well against Baltimore...my mood about them is a bit different from my last post...

Five months...wow...

Oh, and go Sox, go Indians, and... go Cubs, I guess.

...this thoroughly depressed after a Browns game in a very long time.

26-24 loss to the Raiders, folks. Down 16-0 after twenty-five minutes, Cribbs ran back a kick, they got a FG after a fumble, and went into halftime down 6. They came out, scored on a gorgeous throw to Edwards, gave up a touchdown and a field goal, and then Anderson ran a ball in to make it 26-24 Oakland with 3:31 to play. The Browns barely got a stop, got the ball back at their own six with 1:04 to play, made it to the Oakland 23...and Phil Dawson's forty-yarder never had a chance, blocked at the line of scrimmage to seal the Raiders' victory.

I'm so f***ing disgusted with this team it's not even funny. Anderson's IQ doesn't appear to be over 75, given some of those throws. His inability to make checkdown passes is absurd. Get Quinn out there!

Hey!

So...I left off mid-evening Thursday, ne?

Friday: School went fine, not much seemed to occur...kinda odd, really. I stayed after for pretend-deadline and then walked home around 4...it was really cool to get back nice and early. Then I went to services with my dad Friday night, which was nice. They caused me to do some thinking, which tends to get a bit iffy sometimes, but...

Saturday: Fasting was...not fun. I had a headache basically the whole day from not eating. I spent the morning reading, basically, did a few things in the early afternoon and then, because I was really getting miserable, slept on the couch from about 3 until 6. Then...Hannah and I went to visit Sarah where she was babysitting, which was cool, so we talked for a while, then I went home and did...oh that's right, close to nothing. Fun.

Today so far: I helped move crap this morning, now I'm doing this and then I'm gonna go do a couple things (like study for Chem) before I go watch the Browns game.

Other announcements:
-Sox have clinched a playoff spot; their magic number to win the East is 6.
-Woof! Woof! Woof! Go Browns!
-Explaining fantasy football to Mel was...errm, interesting. *grins*
-We're going to Sawmill Creek tomorrow for a tournament, which is supposed to be really nice. It should be fun...

It'll likely be a while before I update again, since it's going to be a quite busy week...the tournament tomorrow, deadline all week, LELs on Thursday, the appointments meeting Friday, the x-word tournament Saturday...ack.

OK, so apparently I updated on...Saturday? Oh, really incredibly early Saturday. So now I'm obligated under the terms of my contract to bore you with the past six days.

Saturday: Didn't do much in the morning, then went to play golf in the afternoon; I didn't play too well. Came home, watched the Sox destroy the Yankees 10-1, and then didn't do a whole lot for the rest of Saturday. I'd been kinda sick, so...

Sunday: Woof! Woof! Woof! Go Browns! Yikes, that game was scary and amazing at the same time. But...hey, 51 is more than 45 (=P), and a win is a win.

Monday: Went to school 0-9, then left for Astorhurst to play Garfield Heights. I hate Astorhurst with a burning passion and I played like crap; I shot 62...and we lost, 179-193. This was actually not too bad a night; I stayed up too late chatting with a couple people, and therefore didn't get much done...

Tuesday: This was the first of the two godawful days. Went to school 0-2, orthodontist 3-7 (but a good sandwich from Au Bon Pain after the appointment), school 8-9, then left for golf...kinda. Actually, we didn't leave until 3, which meant we didn't get out to Briardale until 4, which in turn meant that we didn't tee off until 4:30, which meant that we didn't leave to come back to Shaker until quarter past seven, nor get home until 8...at which point both my parents were at open house, so I didn't get home until 9. (Wow, that was ramble-y.)
I shot 49 at Briardale, which is a quite lovely golf course, and we defeated Euclid 183-186, which was nice. But I had tons of crap to do, and I didn't go to sleep until...oh, that's right, half past one. Gaaaack...

Wednesday: The second of the two bad days. School was mostly OK (I was there for everything save AP Chem), then we left for Fowler's Mill. That is a really, really, really nice course; I'm kinda excited to play it next Thursday and the following Monday. OK, very excited. =P. Shot 50; 8-6-4-5-5-6-4-6-6. But I took 21 putts...I struck the ball solidly most of the day, but couldn't sink anything...We finished fourth out of the four teams; Mentor shot 160 to win, Solon 168, Geneva 186, and us at 190...ugh. Didn't get home til late again, felt like crap, had a couple...interesting chats, but mostly got stuff done and then went to bed around one.

Today: This was, thank the heavens, a very good day. School was good, if a bit tiring, and then I went for a nice walk in Southerly Park right after school; it's really nice out. No golf, fortunately; I love the game, but three matches in three days is a bit tough, especially without much sleep. Now I'm gonna try to get a bunch of stuff done and hopefully go to sleep in a few hours; heaven knows I need it...

Wow, this went on for a while. Yikes. Anyway...hope you enjoyed the updates on my dull-as-dirt life...oh, I forgot to write this where it goes, but I have braces no longer!! Yeyeyeyeyey!

Ugh...Wow.

Anyway...

Wednesday-- school wasn't bad; the Greek/Latin quizzes were both easy. Then we went to the golf match...*gemit*
Valley Forge 187: 45-45-47-50-52(drop)-53(drop)
Southview 196: 45-48-49-54 (something's up with that math...) drop a 57 and 56
Shaker 199: 41-46(me)-55-57-61(drop)

Ugh. That's a pathetic loss; pair of losses, actually. We're 5-6, 2-2 in the LEL Lake. I think we have Garfield @ Astorhurst on Monday, Euclid @ Briardale on Tuesday, and Mentor/Geneva/Solon @ Fowler's Mill on Wednesday. We'll prolly beat Euclid, and GH should be close; I don't think we'll beat any of the teams on the Wednesday, because they're all really tough.

4 hour chats are fun. :)

Thursday was Rosh Hashanah; being the good Jew that I am, I managed not to go to temple at all. ......yeah.

Friday (yesterday, now, I guess) was a mostly miserable day. I was and still am sick; really stuffy, no energy, yeah. The day was mostly fine; I got a lot done in Shakerite, and my other classes were fine. Oh, and lunch was nice.
But...oh my god...that Red Sox game was the most painful baseball game I've ever endured. We were up 7-2 after 7 innings, and promptly collapsed like the straw house in the story of the three little pigs. 6 bad-word runs in the 8th, and no ability to score even with a baserunner in the 8th and 9th...the decision to send Ortiz home in the 3rd or 4th was, in retrospect, the killer...gaack.
Oh, and Shaker apparently got slaughtered as well. Lovely...

I'm actually feeling a bit better...thank god for squirrels...

Update on the past few days

I left off on Friday night, I guess, so I'll pick up on Saturday...

Saturday, I had the board meeting for JCL in the morning; I went down with White, Mel, Alli, and Eric. That was, of course, a ton of fun, and the meeting went really well. When we got back, I went to the end of the Shaker-Bedford, hung out with CG and a bunch of other people, got embarrassed/recognized by Wonson, and watched Shaker come up a day late, a dollar short, and 13 points behind...
That night was my free time/work night; I watched a bit of Oregon/Michigan and Penn State/Notre Dame, then did a whole lot of nothing the rest of the night. :) I did do the current events analysis...

Sunday was the Browns game, which was unqualified disaster even for the Browns. Wow...they ~~suck~~stink. At least we don't go back to Cleveland Browns Stadium until 10/14...Then I went to the Goldfarbs' birthday party, which was a ton of fun (yay bowling! yay pool! not so much yay drama...) Then...I went home, did some HW, scored the picks pool, and lay awake until quarter past three...*gemit*

Monday was a surprisingly good day. Not much of interest happened, and it was early dismissal, which meant that shakerite/econ/math were 10 minutes shorter and chem was 20 minutes so...
We got crushed, 158-193, by Padua. We actually didn't play too badly, at least Julian and I didn't, but I guess the other guys (I couldn't stay til the end) didn't play too well. Props to Tuttle for the 48, though.

Today was a long day; I felt really tired and crabby most of the time. Ahh, well, it's mostly over. It'll be a tough night, because I have a lot to do that I'm currently not doing, but oh well...I have my computer back...

Southview tomorrow, which is the last home match. Then Garfield Heights Monday, Euclid Tuesday, and Mentor on Wednesday...yikes.

We played Mentor at Highland; we had issues with the match time so we ended up playing a lineup consisting of me at 1, Henning at 2, Julian at 3, Ron at 4, Seth at 5, and Tuttle at 6.
Mentor's scary and scary good.

OK...several things:

1) recap
-Thursday: Activity Fair was a lot of fun, and I think we should have plenty of people at the meeting on the 5th. This is a good thing. That day, thinking back, was also quite good.
-Friday: School was fine, then the board meeting went well. And...*thinks back* oh, I got some stuff done, which was good. Plus watching tennis was fun.
-Saturday: Shaker played well enough to beat Collinwood 34-7. Collinwood is really bad. Then...oh, I watched Federer beat John Isner, but I like John Isner a lot. We went to Hunan for dinner, which was good, and I came back, pretended to work a bit, and then followed Clay Buchholz's fantastic no-hitter of the Orioles. Oh, and watched Shahar Peer beat Nicole Vaidisova; that was a good match, and I'm impressed with Peer.
-Sunday: lazy morning with a little work mixed in, then the most schizophrenic golf round ever:
Front nine: shot 60. 10-5-6-6-4-7-6-8-8. No pars, 20 putts, 2 fairways, no greens.
Back nine: shot 39. 4-3-4-4-4-4-5-5-6. 6 pars, 16 putts, 2 fairways, 5 greens. Um, wow. That's tied for the freakin' best nine of my life.

I don't like Fox Creek much. It's a very confusing course that requires too much local knowledge to play effectively. Hey, it's better than I played freshman year there...

I like Shaker; I'm sad we won't play it again this season. It's so much nicer than any other course I've played.

My nine-hole scoring average so far (4 matches): 52+51+45+42=190 = 47.5/match. I'd like to knock that down under 45 by the end of the season. We'll see.

OK. Enough about golf. :)

Life in general has been quite good.
Initial impressions of classes:
0 - Greek: I like getting time to work on Greek, and I like having a class with a lot of my sophomore friends. Getting up forty-five minutes early isn't that much fun, but it's worth it for that class.
1 - Shakerite (study hall-ish thing): I like having the time to do what I want for a while. It'll be nice when I actually accomplish stuff then, but oh well.
2 - Econ: I like Mrs. Jones, and I think I'm going to like the class. When I get my sleep schedule a little more organized, that class will be more fun.
3 - Math: It's math, it's Mrs. White, Melissa's in it. I'm happy.
4/5 - English: Mr. Springstubb is kinda weird, but I do like him. And Peter/Melissa make that class interesting. I think it'll be a good year in there.
6 - Lunch. I have but one comment: I like being squishy.
7/8 - Latin: This is a good class. We've done more real work in that class in three+ days than in a quarter last year. We're through Catullus 1 and 51 so far, and we've done hendecasyllabic and Sapphic strophe. Yay Latin competence!!
9/10 - Chem: This class is great. It's cool, there are only 15 people, I like Ms. Brown, Diana's in there, and I enjoy the stuff. Yeyeyey!!!

I think that's about all I have for now. Pretty relaxed weekend; I only have significant homework for two classes (econ and math) and even that, along with the other stuff, won't be bad at all. Football tomorrow; that'll be fun, and even better if we win. :)

Shaker/Cle. Heights and the past two days

The past two days were pretty good.

Sunday was my day to finally attack the bulk of my summer reading. (Gee, sciura, you think you're a bad procrastinator.) Here's what I had:

-I finally finished How To Read Literature Like A Professor, most of which I'd already read. It was a very good, very interesting book. The author used humor well and the points he made were quite useful.

-I started and finished Freakonomics, which was also a quite good book, despite my disagreements with parts of it. The stuff the authors wrote about really, really made you think, which I like, and they tackled interesting questions.

-I started and got through 5 chapters of All The King's Men, which puts me a hair over half done. It shouldn't be too bad; I'll knock the rest out tonight. It moves slowly at times, but overall it's a good, entertaining read.

Also on Sunday, I went to our block party, which went well. Plus, I watched the Red Sox thoroughly destroy the White Sox, 11-1, en route to completing a 4-game sweep in which the '04 champs outscored the '05 champs 46-7 and scored ten runs or more in each game. And the Yankees lost! 7-and-a-half, baby!!

Today, I read more of ATKM (see above), then brought stuff to school, which was helpful. I also got my situtation with journalism figured out (yeyeyey!!!) and helped Mr. White with some stuff.

Then we had our match against Heights.
My round was good: two doubles, four bogeys, two pars, and a birdie on 6 to shoot 42, with 15 putts (good), 1 fairway (bad), and 2 greens (meh).
The scores: Shaker 174 (Bruell 38, Orr 42, Williams 52, Cowett 42, ~~Cross 62~~, ~~Tuttle 58~~)
Cleveland Heights 190 (45, 46, 47, 56, 58, 52).
That's a good win for us, 'specially since we lost to them in the tournament a couple weeks ago. Also, it's our best score (out of two), and breaking 175 is important and good for us; if we could get under 170, we can win most of our matches. (That'd mean, probably, four scores in the 40s or better.)
